Being a WAPA has been an amazing journey so far. I’m confident in my career path, and I love the fact that all of our teachers are working in the industry and are always helping us towards our goals.
From Voice to Context to Devising then Physical Theatre to Text to Dance, and all of it over again – it’s a wave of subjects sweeping over you and you become a sponge of knowledge. I’ve found my first few months at uni fascinating.
Voice appeals to me as a singer because we learn about the biology behind it and the different ways to use it in speech. Not to mention – how to actually look after yourself. I briefly suffered with Laryngitis and went on voice rest for a few days (I had a whiteboard); whilst it was amusing for everyone, it gave me the opportunity to explore facial expressions and non-verbal communication in different lessons.
Context is always a blast with Terence and his mind-blowing ‘Ker-ching!’ moments. We’re learning in depth about Aristotle and Stanislavskian methods, and I’ve been able to apply that knowledge in other projects.
In Physical Theatre we’ve performed two opposing ensemble pieces, (‘Senseless’ and ‘I could, I would, I have’), at Showtime with valuable and constructive feedback from the tutors and students.
Eventually I’d like to work in film and television; luckily I’ve had the pleasure of working with Film and Media degree students at the University Campus. I featured in a trailer called ‘Runaway’ which was physically challenging and I learned a lot about on-set etiquette and how to sustain in different environments.
The FdA offers the opportunity to learn a range of different skills (Theatre, Tech, Voice, Movement) which we can excel in and take out into industry. It’s pretty awesome.
