My first year of Uni, and coming to the end of my first term, in a word – brilliant. The course is great. The range of lessons we have, the things we get to do. In particular Individual Exploration is so fun and creative. It is as it sounds, you get to write your own monologue about yourself or a subject of your choosing. I personally love to write and having this is fantastic as it really makes you think about yourself and yourself as a performer. It’s only a five minute piece so you have to narrow your life down to five minutes, it’s a challenge and one to rise to. Another part of the course is Showtime, which is on Thursdays: it’s basically a show what you want session. Anything that you have been working on in the week, be it a song, sketch, poem and so on. It’s something I love to watch and take part in. You receive feedback from the tutors on the piece, which is very helpful in developing the ideas, especially if you are working on a play, a monologue or something you’ve written. We started to work in our groups on the Greek Theatre pieces. Putting a forty minute play together from scratch – another daunting challenge, something I didn’t get to do a college. At WAPA its nice to be given full control of something and take responsibility. Part of that is the atmosphere to be free, creative and fail but knowing if you do fail it’s not a setback , it’s an opportunity.
